Know the Difference between Elective PCI and Primary PCI, Bunda Heart Center Service

Primary PCI is a medical procedure performed as a treatment step to treat a heart attack. Heart attack is a life-threatening disease. As you know, the heart is a vital organ that functions to pump blood to the lungs and throughout the body. If there is a disturbance in the organ, indeed, its performance will also be disrupted.

A heart attack occurs when the heart muscle doesn't get the blood flow it needs. The cause is a blockage in the blood vessels due to the accumulation of cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels. People who have had a heart attack should get treatment as soon as possible. Just a little late, the consequences can be fatal, which leads to death. The Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedure can be performed to minimize the death rate due to heart attack.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Effective Treatment for Heart Attack

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) is a medical procedure performed to treat blockage of blood vessels leading to the heart. The blockage occurs due to the buildup of cholesterol on the walls of blood vessels. Cholesterol deposits become plaques that stick to the walls of blood vessels, causing the heart muscle not to get blood flow.

Primary PCI has become the main choice because it is considered more effective and efficient. PCI is a simple procedure performed by a cardiologist without major surgery. This procedure is a coronary artery intervention by inserting a catheter that has been equipped with a balloon.

In a PCI procedure, guided X-ray images will help locate where the blockage of the blood vessel is occurring. After finding the blockage point, the clump will be cleaned. How to clean the clogging clot, which is to inflate a balloon that is inserted with a catheter into the coronary arteries. The balloon at the end of the catheter will inflate, pushing the plaque away.

Once the plaque is pushed, the blood vessels will open and widen to smooth blood flow. This procedure mainly also involves the intervention of a metal stent along with a catheter and balloon. Metal stents are mesh cylinders whose function is to keep the arteries open and prevent re-narrowing. An interventional cardiologist usually performs this medical procedure.

Know What is Primary PCI

In general, there are two types of PCI, namely Primary PCI and Elective PCI. Primary PCI is often known as primary angioplasty. This procedure is performed on patients who have had a heart attack. Primary angioplasty is an effective medical procedure to treat heart attack patients in an emergency situation because the process is relatively fast with a simple procedure. Time is a very important factor in the management of a heart attack. The speed of treatment is the key to patient safety from death due to heart attack. Primary angioplasty is performed by inserting a catheter, balloon, and stent to no longer block the blood vessels.

Know What is Elective PCI

The Elective PCI procedure is no different from the Primary PCI. However, elective PCI is not performed in an emergency. Elective PCI is an action that is carried out after the patient has undergone treatment or routine care before. Generally, doctors will give other programs to patients. For example, they give medicines or ask patients to improve their lifestyle by exercising regularly and adjusting their diet.

However, if the program cannot overcome the blockage of blood vessels, then elective PCI will be performed. Thus, it can be concluded that the difference between Primary and Elective PCI lies in their urgency. Elective PCI is performed for patients who have received routine care before. Meanwhile, primary PCI is given to cardiac arrest patients in an emergency to save their lives.
